esr 是 Eric S. Raymond 的縮寫，他的網址是 http://www.catb.org/~esr/ ，自由軟體社群中的傳道者，最為著名的軟體計畫為 fetchmail，一個可在 UNIX 系統上收取信件的自由軟體，著作有「教堂與市集」(The Cathedral & the Bazaar)、「Unix 編程藝術」，Netscape 公司釋出 Mozilla 原始碼與 esr 的推動有著關係。 esr 也寫了一些駭客歷史與文化 HOWTO，這些 HOWTOs 對 lamer 的教化意義盛大，最重要的恐怕是「提問的智慧」How To Ask Questions The Smart Way，此外還有「如何成為巫師」So You Want To Be A Wizard? (The Loginataka)、「如何成為駭客」等。值得花點時間去閱讀。
